Sterilising – Why it’s important and what to use!

There are lots of places you can go to find information on sterilizing and plenty of places to gain the advice you need.  I’ll be including some of the best sterilizers I’ve found at a range of prices too!

It is important to sterilise all your baby’s feeding equipment, including bottles and teats, until they are at least 12 months old.

This will protect your baby against infections, in particular diarrhea and vomiting

Before sterilising, you need to:

  • Clean bottles, teatsand other feeding equipment in hot, soapy water as soon as possible after feeds.
  • Usea clean bottle brush to clean bottles (only use this brush for cleaning bottles), and a small teat brush to clean the inside of teats. You can also turn teats inside out and wash in hot soapy water. Don’t be tempted to use salt to clean teats, this can be dangerous for your baby.
  • You can put your baby’s feeding equipment in the dishwasher to clean it if you prefer. (Putting feeding equipment through the dishwasher cleans it but doesn’t sterilise it.) Make sure bottles, lids and teats are facing downwards. You may prefer to wash teats separately by hand to make sure they are completely clean.
  • Rinse all your equipment in clean, cold running water before sterilising.

The advice above applies to all your baby’s feeding equipment, and whether you are using expressed breast milk or formula milk.

So which ones should you buy?

Well – it depends really on what you’re going to be sterilizing!

Here’s my top three

Tommee Tippee Microwave steriliser, great for 4 bottles at a time and quick too. Great for taking to parents as it’s not bulky or hard to transport. At around £17.99 it’s a great mid range buy.

The Tommee Tippee Advanced Steriliser and dryer is great as it holds up to 8 bottles and has a range of functions. Great for everyday use in the home. At around £60 it’s not cheap, however it will last!

My holiday essential for travelling with little ones has to be sterilising bags. They’re re-usable up to twenty times each bag and they are around £10 for 5 bags. They fit two bottles in at a time or breastfeeding pumps etc. They microwave in 5 minutes and are great for taking away on long trips or for having in relatives houses. A must buy!

All of the above can be purchased on amazon heres the link for the bags
