Surviving the Summer Holidays as a Parent:

Well - we're in the thick of it now aren't we... Summer holidays—a time of joy, sunshine, and…chaos? For many parents, this season brings a mix of excitement and dread. The kids are home, routines are out the window, and the challenge of keeping everyone entertained looms large.

But fear not! With a bit of planning and creativity, you can survive—and even enjoy—the summer holidays.

Here’s how:

1. Embrace a Flexible Routine

While it's tempting to let go of all structure, a loose routine can be your best friend. Establish a daily rhythm that includes time for meals, activities, and rest. This doesn’t mean rigid schedules, but knowing what’s coming next helps kids feel secure and reduces the "I’m bored" complaints.

2. Plan Activities in Advance

Spend some time brainstorming activities together —both big and small. Create a mix of outings, like trips to the park or beach, and at-home adventures like crafting, baking, or backyard camping. Having a list of go-to ideas can save you when boredom strikes. Plan in playdates and down time days and put the timetable where everyone can see it! If you are

working from home - plan in worktime too - then everyone will know who's doing what when!

3. Involve the Kids in Planning

Get the kids excited by letting them choose some of the activities. Whether it’s deciding on the day’s adventure or picking a new recipe to try, giving them a say not only empowers them but also keeps them engaged. Get them to use their ipads or the computer to research days and activities if they're old enough - planning with a budget is great for them to learn the true cost of things no matter their age!

4. Balance Screen Time

Screens can be a lifesaver, but balance is key. Set clear limits on screen time and encourage other forms of entertainment like reading, board games, or outdoor play. Consider using screens as a reward for completing other activities, or getting them to plan days out - mine have loved that this year and have created presentations and spreadsheets showing screens can be used for great things as well as mindless scrolling!

5. Take Time for Yourself

Don’t forget about your own needs. Whether it’s a quiet coffee in the morning, a workout, or a few minutes of reading, carve out small moments for yourself. Happy parents make for happier kids! Book onto one of our theta healing sessions and treat yourself to an hour of you time!

6. Lean on Your Village

If possible, share the load with other parents. Arrange playdates, swap childcare, or join forces for group outings. Not only does this give you a break, but it also provides social interaction for your kids.

7. Lower Your Expectations

Not every day will be perfect, and that’s okay. Some days will be filled with laughter and fun, while others might be more challenging. Go easy on yourself—parenting isn’t about perfection, but about love and resilience. Remember, when we were little we didn't have social media - so nothing to compare our garden days to. Some of your best memories of summer as a child won't be of the big days out, they'll be of picnics in the garden, dens and water fights - that stuffs free!

So... as a reminder to myself as well as you...

Summer holidays don’t have to be a daunting experience. With a little preparation, a dose of creativity, and a lot of patience, you can not only survive but thrive during this sunny season. So, take a deep breath, embrace the chaos, and make some lasting memories with your kids!

Have the best time
